Peter Wallfried was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1952. His family emigrated to Australia in 1955, moving from state to state until finally settling in South Australia. His childhood was spent in the Port Adelaide/Semaphore area. Tertiary studies were completed at the S.A. School of Art (Stanley Street), Western Teachers College and the University of S.A. Peter is primarily a teacher of art but has concentrated more on his own work in the last 8 years, having four solo exhibitions in that time as well as entering various competitions and prizes.

As a child his parents loved to travel and would load up the old VW Kombi van with gear and kids and travel all over South Australia and Australia. This has left a love of travel with Peter, who has made many painting and drawing trips around South Australia in recent years. His works concentrate on the coast and rivers of the State, this perhaps being a legacy of Hamburg, Port Adelaide and travel.

After winning First Prize as a child in the Junior Primary Section in the Royal Adelaide Horticultural Show in 1960, Peter put his art on hold until recently. He has won the Port Adelaide Rotary Prize for paintings of Port Adelaide in both 2006 & 2007 and Second Prize in 2008. He was a finalist in the Fleurieu Art Prize in 2008.

His works have very strong tonal qualities and demonstrate a lively observation of nature and its surrounds. They capture the very real image and transpose the viewer into a relaxing and peaceful space. His handling of reflections is entrancing, and one of the most noticable features of his work.

Presented on this website are many examples of his work. Click on the 'thumbnails' to see larger images.
